WHAT IS A CONTRACT ATTORNEY? A contract attorney can work for an individual client, another attorney or law firm on legal cases on a “contract” basis and works typically on a temporary contract basis, usually with no guaranteed employment term. Contract attorneys are usually hired by a client or law firm for a specific job or length of time. When the job or time is completed, the relationship is terminated unless renewed or extended by the employed. There is no right to continued employment. A contract attorney could be doing a variety of assignments including legal research, appellate brief writing, trial and motion briefs, other legal writing and research projects for attorneys and law firms on an hourly or fixed rate basis. They may be an exceptional law school graduate, private practitioners seeking to use their expertise in different settings, attorneys in transition due to marketplace changes, attorneys seeking a new level of practice experience, judicial retirees, or law professors with unique and practice experience.
